first_imgLetterkenny Golf News: The “official” tee-off for the golfing season, the St.Patrick’s Day Open, drew an entry of up to one hundred and thirty players to Barnhill which was all the more satisfactory for the winner.Clifford Malone [7], to know that he beat not only the course with a one under par 71 gross, but such a large “field” with a high calibre of low handicappers. Clifford took the turn after nine holes with 23pts following birdies at 1st, 3rd and 9th and, despite dropping three shots during the round, another birdie at 12th and a straight par run over the final five holes gave him an unassailable total of 44pts to take the St. Patrick’s Day trophy.Cat 4 members Dermot Higgins [23] and Victor Byrne [23] battled it out for the runner-up spot and it was Dermot who claimed that placing on B.O.T.Playing steady handicap golf intermitten with a few double bogeys, each of these competitors did their best to claim the trophy but fell short on the back nine.Saturday 21st Open again brought the single figure handicappers to the fore with 2015 club Captain Gerard Duffy [6] showing no signs of “letting up” due to his arduous office position this year!Played in crisp, dry conditions but with a touch of spring chill in the air, Gerard recorded birdies at 7th, 10th, 11th and 13th, the only blemish on the card being a double bogey at 4th and finishing with a straight five pars in a row from 14th thru 18th and a 24pt back nine for a 43pt total and a one under par gross 71.Runner-up, just one point behind on 42pts, was fellow six handicapper Don Ponsonby, also recording birdies at 1st, 4th, 9th and 16th and returning equal nines of 21pts each to relegate third placed Tony Duffy [22] on B.O.T.Sunday 22nd confined competition winner was decided by another B.O.T and it was that man in form Don Ponsonby [5] who followed up his second placing on Saturday by taking top honour this time. One of the easiest read cards in a long time, Don had fifteen pars, two bogeys and one birdie at the 18th hole par five, 20pts on each nine holes culminating in a total of 40pts.Relegated to second place on that b.o.t. was Seamus Mc Hugh [16], whose double bogey at 9th no doubt had him lose out on top spot. In third place was another early season “form” player, Michael Collum [8] whose 39pts consisted of an uncharacteristic “blank” at 7th and a birdie at par five 18th. Congratulations to Letterkenny Golf Club member Eamonn Mc Glinchey on winning the North Western Alliance Captain’s Day at Dunfanaghy on Saturday last. Also on the prizewinners’ rostrum were members Eamon O’ Carroll, Clive Davison, Finnian O’ Doherty and Jamie Foley. The new GolfNet system is now available and all members need to re-register so: log onto GolfNet – click on Login (top right hand corner) and click “Create an Account” – You need to have your GUI/ILGU handicap card with details for registering.
