They said they wanted to take at least a top-eight finish back to Simi Valley, because Sione Fua of Crespi of Encino won the heavyweight state championship last season. That was the first time a wrestler from the San Fernando Valley won a state title. But the Simi Valley High wrestlers fell short, finishing in the top 12 in their respective weight divisions. Bruno lost in the fifth round of the 160-pound division consolation bracket to Canyon Springs’ Joshua Rodriguez in a 3-2 decision. Murphy lost to A.J. Guardado of West Covina in a 6-1 decision in the fifth round of the 135-pound consolation bracket. Murphy had beaten Guardado at last week’s Masters Meet in Rialto. “(Bruno and Murphy) both got behind and it’s hard to catch up in these matches,” said Guy Greene, Simi Valley’s coach. “You come up a bit short of placing but I can’t say enough about their efforts. If they finished third, fourth or 12th, this was a good run.” Bruno (36-6) trailed Rodriguez 2-0 going into the second period, when he recovered and tied the score with a 2-point takedown. But Rodriguez was able to escape from a Bruno hold with 47 seconds left in the second period to earn one point and take the lead for good. Bruno, the Marmonte League 160-pound champion, spent most of the third period on top with his arms wrapped around Rodriguez’s torso, but he couldn’t flip him over to try for the pin or take him down for more points. “I knew he was going to play it tough,” Bruno said. “I knew I had to give it all my effort but he was very talented. I’m disappointed I didn’t place but there are a lot of guys who came here and didn’t finish in the top 12.” BAKERSFIELD – There won’t be a state wrestling champion from the San Fernando Valley this year. Matt Bruno and Mikey Murphy were aware of this going into the second day of competition at the CIF State Championships on Saturday at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield. That is because they were the only remaining wrestlers from the area. Chad Truxler was the last wrestler to place in state for Simi Valley. He finished third in 1997 in the heavyweight division and took fourth the next year in the same category. Bruno reached the quarterfinals Friday by beating his first two opponents before losing to Zach Sesar of Vacaville in a 6-1 decision. That sent him to the consolation bracket in which he needed to beat Rodriguez to place in the top eight and win the next three matches to place third. Murphy won his first match in the championship bracket before losing to Tracy High’s Billy Strmiska in a 7-4 decision, sending him to the consolation bracket. Murphy won his first two consolation matches by decision before being eliminated by Guardado. “I came out kind of nervous (in the championship round),” Murphy said. “I was too conservative then. I opened up in the consolation rounds and took some shots, something I don’t normally do. I was hoping I would place with (Bruno).” [email protected] (818) 713-3602 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
