A bounce off the posts, or between a large post and a smaller outer post, it is worth one point. This is called a “behind.” Getty https://images.daznservices.com/di/library/sporting_news/3b/b7/afl-ball-getty-032120-ftr_zdkqwq5k1ub81hsg458b2ogli.jpg?t=-33712432&w=500&quality=80 It is similar to a combination of a rugby ball and a football. The RulesThe object of the game is simple: move the ball down the field and score. You can move the ball in three ways:Running: if you run the ball, you have to bounce it every 16 yards (48 feet).Fist: players use their fist to hit it forward, almost like a bump in volleyball. Called a handball, this is unique to Aussie Rules.Kicking: the most common way to move the ball. Players are known for their deadly accuracy, and can hit a teammate running at 50 yards (150 feet). If the kick is high, the player can jump to catch it. This is called a “mark.” Players can jump on and over other players to get higher in the air to catch, very similar to rugby.  Founded in 1896 as the Victorian Football League, the name was changed to “Australian Football League” in 1990. Teams are spread out across five of Australia’s six states. The sport is uniquely Australian, and combines American football, rugby, and soccer into a weird and beautiful game. Here’s how Aussie Rules works, and here’s how America reacted. The FieldThe AFL field is larger than most other sports. So for those of you here in the USA who are sitting at home thinking, “damn, that’s a big field.”You’re right. Here is what an Aussie Rules field looks like compared to other sports: pic.twitter.com/Gm6UYV7uMn— USAFL (@USAFL1997) March 21, 2020While players have to have incredible stamina to run back and forth, there is no specific “type” of AFL player. They can range in height anywhere from 5’8″ to 7’0″. The most important thing is their endurance and strength. Players also need excellent hand and foot coordinaton. The BallThe ball, like the field, is egg-shaped, which makes for a lot of crazy bounces. Positions include defenders, forwards, and midfielders. There is no offsides rule. You can tackle, but it must be between the shoulders and knees. There are four 20-minute quarters, but like soccer, time is added on for stoppages in play, as much as 10 additional minutes.More complete rules here:The ScoreOnce in scoring position, the idea is to kick the ball through the upright posts at the end of the field, seen here. The Australian Football League, Aussie Rules Football, or just footie, has become America’s new pastime. On Thursday, Fox Sports announced it would show three games of Aussie Rules Football on TV for Americans. People were confused, but mostly excited to watch some kind of sporting event.last_img read more
