PIZZA Hut GCC mauled GCC Spartans 7-0 when the Guyana Hockey Board (GHB)-organised Woodpecker Products-sponsored Women’s Hockey League got underway last Monday at the Georgetown Cricket Club ground.Tricia Fiedtkou opened the scoring for the winners in the ninth minute and 15 minutes later Marrana Fiedtkou made it 2-0 for the winners. Kerensa Fernandes then closed off the first half with a 28th minute goal to give Pizza Hut GCC a commanding 3-0 lead. However, it was Under-21 player Aliyah Gordon, who played for the senior national team and who stole the spotlight in the second segment with a helmet-trick, with goals raining in the 40th, 54th, 57th and 58th minutes to give Pizza Hut GCC a 7-0 win.She already had two goals from her last game against Old Fort Shooting Stars so her tally is now six and she has overtaken Sonia Jardine who scored five in the first game. The last field goal Jardine scored in the 58th minute. She showed great skill and speed, eliminating two defenders before dribbling the goalkeeper and walking into the goal with the ball.During last Monday’s game, Spartans had quite a few tries that were futile. This team is showing that the players will not be mauled by the more experienced team after Woodpecker Hikers were only able to score two goals the day before.
REAL Madrid went to the top of La Liga thanks to a hard-fought victory at Real Sociedad.Zinedine Zidane’s side are level on points with Barca, who drew 0-0 with Sevilla on Friday, but go top because of their superior head-to-head record.Sergio Ramos’ penalty after the lively Vinicius Jr was fouled gave the visitors the lead.Karim Benzema doubled their advantage before Mikel Merino’s strike set up a tense finale. There was controversy when substitute Adnan Januzaj thought he had made it 1-1 with a strike from outside the area but it was ruled out for a Merino offside. Merino did not get a touch but the officials deemed he was blocking goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois’ view, so interfering with play.Their sense of grievance grew when moments later Benzema controlled a Federico Valverde cross with his shoulder before firing home. The goal stood after a video assistant referee review for handball.Madrid looked comfortable at that stage but Merino rifled a shot in via the underside of the crossbar, after a cross from substitute Roberto Lopez, to keep the closing minutes interesting. The visitors’ biggest problem from the game came when Ramos was injured soon after his goal and needed an ice pack on his leg in the stands.Madrid – who have only won one La Liga title since 2012 – are now eight victories away from winning the league.Barcelona host Athletic Bilbao on Tuesday with Real at home to Mallorca the next day (both 21:00 BST kick-offs).(BBC Sport)
14 June 2012South Africa’s trade conditions improved in May, the SA Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Sacci) reported on Wednesday. Its seasonally adjusted Trade Activity Index (TAI) gained five points to measure 56 for the month.“The better conditions are in correspondence with the relatively strong growth in the wholesale and retail trade, hotel and restaurant sector,” Sacci said in a statement. The non-seasonally adjusted TAI stood at 55 last month, compared to 48 in April and 49 in May last year.Sales and new orders recovered strongly to 64 and 58 compared to 50 for both indices in April 2012. A year ago the sales volume index was 56 and the new orders index 46.The inventories index increased moderately to 51 from 47 in April 2012, following strong inventory build-ups in both February and March 2012.Supplier deliveries recovered by six index points.“The fewer trading days in April played a significant role in weaker trade activity in April 2012 compared to May,” said Sacci.Indices for sales and input prices decreased from 63 and 72 in April to 59 and 68 respectively in May. Price pressures moderated despite an average rise in administered prices of 12 percent.“The effect of the weaker rand is yet to trigger higher prices,” the chamber said.Trade expectations remained positive, but tapered down in May.“Expectations are following the same pattern as in 2011, where the initial bullish outlook was moderated during the year,” said Sacci.“Weak economic conditions will continue to weigh on trade conditions in the coming months.”The six-month outlook for key components of trade activity contracted in May. Sales and input price expectations eased to 61 and 68 compared to 68 and 75 respectively in April.Inventories were expected to decline further.Employment conditions in the trade environment worsened during the month as the index moved from 43 to 41 in negative territory. The outlook for the employment index weakened to 49, from 55 in April.Sapa
3 June 2014Volkswagen Group South Africa’s (VWSA’s) 500 000th EA111 engine rolled off the production line on Friday, marking the 2-millionth engine produced at the company’s manufacturing plant in Uitenhage in the Eastern Cape.Production of the EA111 engine, which powers Volkswagen’s Polo and Polo Vivo models locally and equivalent models abroad, began in 2010 with volumes of 89 000 a year.“Since then, there has been a steady growth in production volumes, with this year’s production set to reach the 175 000 mark,” Richard Reid, head of VWSA’s engine plant, said in a statement on Monday.Reid said that, of these 175 000 engines, 77% were targeted for export to international markets, including factories in China, India, Malaysia, Taiwan and Mexico.“Last year in September, we introduced a fourth shift in the engine plant which increased the production capacity from 147 000 to 175 000 engines. The bolstering of production was due to the high demand from the Chinese market,” Reid said. The company said it had introduced new production line technology over the years to handle the increased growth in production. This included a state-of-the-art testing facility which ensures that each engine is 100% proof tested before it leaves the line, as well as hi-tech interactive machinery that assists operators with instructions via a screen connected to the electronic bolting equipment.VWSA managing director David Powels said these improvements had enabled the company to produce an engine every two minutes, while ensuring “that we are continually improving our products for both the local and international markets”.SAinfo reporter
IPL 2016 April 14, 2016 Published on Aaron Finch and Brendon McCullum played destructive knocks up the order to guide Gujarat Lions to a comprehensive seven-wicket win over Rising Pune Supergiants in the battle of debutants at the Indian Premier League, here today.Their second consecutive win propelled Gujarat Lions to the top of the points table.Chasing a below-par 164 for win, Gujarat Lions rode on a powerful batting display to overwhelm the target with two overs to spare.Earlier, Faf du Plessis smashed a quick half century before Gujarat Lions pulled things back with fine death bowling display to restrict the Supergiants to 163 for five.Coming out to chase the target, Finch (50 off 36) and McCullum (49 off 31) got Gujarat Lions off to a breezy start, sharing 85 runs for the opening stand in just 8.3 overs.Finch was the initiator as he used his power to great effect and smashed young leg—spinner Murugan Ashwin (2/31) for four boundaries in the sixth over. He then took on Rajat Bhatia and clobbered the medium-pacer for two sixes in the next over to make his intentions clear.Finch raced to his 50 in just 33 balls with the help of seven boundaries ans two sixes but soon after he perished trying to hit another boundary, caught by Ishant Shama at fine-leg off Murugan Ashwin. After Finch’s dismissal, McCullum took the onus of him and struck Ravichandran Ashwin for a bounadry and a six in the 12th over before getting a life when Mahendra Singh Dhoni missed a regulation stumping in the next ball. But the missed stumping did not cost Supergiants much as McCullum got out soon, caught by Du Plessis of Ishant Sharma as the batsman went for an extravagant shot. But by that time the damage has already been done and therafter Gujarat Lions captain Suresh Raina (24) and Dwayne Bravo (22 off 10) played sensibly to take the hosts home with 12 balls to spare cricket COMMENT COMMENTS SHARE SHARE SHARE EMAIL
“Plenty of people know the feeling of being first, only or different,” Shonda Rhimes told a sold-out audience of more than 10,000 at the 11th annual Massachusetts Conference for Women. “It means you are a trailblazer. There is a responsibility there, whether you want it or not.”Shonda Rhimes speaks to a sold-out audience of more than 10,000 at the 11th annual Massachusetts Conference for Women in BostonCredit/Copyright: Marla Aufmuth for Getty ImagesRhimes, one of television’s most prolific writers and producers, and the creator of hit shows such as “Scandal,” “Grey’s Anatomy” and “How to Get Away with Murder,” and author of a new book “Year of Yes,” has been changing the face of Hollywood by creating more diverse roles for women, both in front of and behind the camera. Noting that the entertainment industry is making slow if uneven progress in its portrayal of women, Rhimes said that the increasing number of women running television shows means that they can decide who gets “hired and fired,” whether women characters will be “secretaries or CEOs,” and “which stories are told.”Conference attendees also heard remarks from Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh and keynote addresses from Sophia Amoruso, founder and executive chairman of Nasty Gal; Tim Gunn, executive producer and star of Lifetime’s “Project Runway,” Ellen Pao, entrepreneur, investor, and writer; Adam Grant, Wharton’s top-rated professor and best-selling author; and Candy Chang, TED senior fellow, urban space artist, and designer. The nonpartisan, nonprofit conference is the largest personal and professional networking event for women in the U.S., with more than 100 industry and thought leaders from across the country. Breakout session topics included leadership, career advancement, personal branding, social media, health and wellness, finance, and more. Conference attendees participated in the popular Bentley University Career Pavilion with in-person resume reviews by human resource experts, career coaching with members of the International Coach Federation of New England and one-on-one conversations with local community and business leaders. Now entering its second decade, the Conference is expanding its offerings to a broader audience and shifting its focus to improving opportunities for women in the workplace. As part of this effort, the Conference presented the inaugural Workplaces That Work Summit. Designed for both men and women in mid-level management positions, the summit focused on leveraging gender partnerships to advance equity within workplaces. Led by industry leaders including David Duncan, Senior Partner at Innosight, and Alison Quirk, Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer at State Street Corporation, the summit provided an interactive and transparent forum for managers to take action to create a level playing field and inclusive leadership within their companies. The Conference also hosted its first Opening Night event on December 9th, providing a taste of the Conference for only $25 to some 4000 attendees. Opening night events included an interview series with best-selling authors; holiday shopping with local women-owned businesses and live entertainment. Attendees pitched their products to Tory Johnson from Good Morning America’s “Deals & Steals!” and met Bert Jacobs, co-founder of the Life is Good company, and Kelley Dempsey, designer and Project Runway contestant.“We are proud to offer even more opportunities for the Conference’s dedicated community of women to further develop their personal and professional lives and to move the needle for women in the workplace,” said Gloria Larson, Board President of the Massachusetts Conference for Women and President of Bentley University. “We can think of no better way to continue creating impact in our second decade of service.”The Massachusetts Conference for Women is generously underwritten by the following sponsors: State Street; EMC; Merck KGaA; Cisco; Boston Scientific; Dell; HOLOGIC; Raytheon; riverbed; Santander; Tyco; Akamai; Bank of America; Bentley University; Fresenius Medial Care; John Hancock; Johnson and Johnson; Juniper; Kronos; Liberty Mutual; Mercer; Sanofi; Suffolk; ThermoFisher; VistaPrint; BainCapital; Crimson Lion; amag; Amtrak; Baxalta; BJs; Blue Cross; CanyonRanch; Intel; John F. New York120.3138.197.8184.108.40.2069%65%37% This year’s surprise standout, the Western New York Flash, has skyrocketed to the top of our table and now has the greatest chance of winning the NWSL championship — 37 percent — up from just a 5 percent chance before the season started. With the league’s top two goal scorers, Lynn Williams and Jessica McDonald (seven and six goals, respectively), the Flash are almost certain to earn a playoff spot. The Washington Spirit will likely grab another — our model gives them a 96 percent chance of making the playoffs. There’s a little less certainty for the third and fourth playoff spots. The Portland Thorns are currently in first place in the league, with 26 points, and have an 86 percent chance of making the postseason. But the team has lost their past two games, in part because several national team players have been absent as they prepare for the Olympics. So Portland may continue to fall in our rankings over the next month. The Chicago Red Stars’ chances of making the playoffs have remained about the same from our initial forecast — dropping to 46 percent from 47 percent — but a strong start to the season has given way to three losses in the past four games. The biggest shock this season, however, has undoubtedly been the rapid descent of the league’s top two teams, Seattle and Kansas City. Both teams were heavily favored in our initial predictions — with a 78 percent and 72 percent chance of making the playoffs, respectively — but at this point, it’s extremely unlikely that either team will earn a playoff berth. There are still six weeks of matches left, but both teams’ chances of winning the championship have plummeted more than 20 percentage points since the season started. Sky Blue97.299.4220.127.116.11.82073 Although our preseason forecast didn’t think it was impossible for both Seattle and Kansas City to miss the playoffs (it assigned roughly a 6 percent chance to that possibility), their drastic decline may indicate that we should re-evaluate some components of the model for next year’s NWSL season. As in many of our sports forecasts, each NWSL team’s rating is reverted toward the league average between seasons to account for factors such as changes in personnel and retirements. For the NWSL, two-thirds of a team’s rating from the previous season carries over into the new season; that amount is based on the first three seasons and is in line with other soccer leagues around the world (both men’s and women’s). This year’s results, however, may indicate that NWSL teams should be reverted further toward the league average each season. Or maybe this is just a crazy season. Only time (and more data) will tell. If at the start of the National Women’s Soccer League season you thought two-time defending champions FC Kansas City would be in third-to-last place just over halfway through the season or that two-time regular-season champions Seattle Reign FC would have almost as many losses as they did in their previous two seasons combined, you’re either psychic or your predictive abilities are far greater than ours. Before this year’s matches got underway, we built a model to forecast the league using the best information we had available: data from the three previous NWSL seasons. But because two of those years were dominated by Seattle and Kansas City, correctly predicting this year’s chaos in the league would have been very difficult. So with the table in tumult and the end of the regular season not far off, we thought this would be good time to update our initial predictions, see what’s changed and look ahead to which four teams are most likely to reach the playoffs this fall. Below is a table showing each team’s overall rating — made up of offensive and defensive components (higher is better for both) — as well as its projected win-loss-tie record and its chances of making the playoffs.
