first_imgAdvertisementBoth Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin spoke to one another via satellite link this week on social media after it was agreed the two would not meet in person until fight week due to their passionate mutual dislike of each other.Instead, a press conference was broadcast over Facebook this week where both teams sat down and spoke on a number of subjects. One of the more contentious moments was when Canelo was asked what he thought about Golovkin’s keep busy fight last May against Vanes Martirosyan. A bout he won comfortably inside the distance.Canelo had a less than complimentary response, saying it wasn’t even a fight:Golovkin took the fight due to the scheduled rematch with Canelo getting put back to this September after the Mexican boxing star failed a drugs test. The issue of the failed drugs test came up at one point during the satellite conference, to which Canelo responded saying that there is no need to talk about it now as the fight is on and will be a better fight than it would have been last May.The rematch is scheduled for September 15th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.Advertisementlast_img read more

This NWSL Season Has Been Nuts Heres How We Forecast The Finish

New York120.3138.197.811.95.52.699%65%37% This year’s surprise standout, the Western New York Flash, has skyrocketed to the top of our table and now has the greatest chance of winning the NWSL championship — 37 percent — up from just a 5 percent chance before the season started. With the league’s top two goal scorers, Lynn Williams and Jessica McDonald (seven and six goals, respectively), the Flash are almost certain to earn a playoff spot. The Washington Spirit will likely grab another — our model gives them a 96 percent chance of making the playoffs. There’s a little less certainty for the third and fourth playoff spots. The Portland Thorns are currently in first place in the league, with 26 points, and have an 86 percent chance of making the postseason. But the team has lost their past two games, in part because several national team players have been absent as they prepare for the Olympics. So Portland may continue to fall in our rankings over the next month. The Chicago Red Stars’ chances of making the playoffs have remained about the same from our initial forecast — dropping to 46 percent from 47 percent — but a strong start to the season has given way to three losses in the past four games. The biggest shock this season, however, has undoubtedly been the rapid descent of the league’s top two teams, Seattle and Kansas City. Both teams were heavily favored in our initial predictions — with a 78 percent and 72 percent chance of making the playoffs, respectively — but at this point, it’s extremely unlikely that either team will earn a playoff berth. There are still six weeks of matches left, but both teams’ chances of winning the championship have plummeted more than 20 percentage points since the season started. Sky Blue97.299.494. Although our preseason forecast didn’t think it was impossible for both Seattle and Kansas City to miss the playoffs (it assigned roughly a 6 percent chance to that possibility), their drastic decline may indicate that we should re-evaluate some components of the model for next year’s NWSL season. As in many of our sports forecasts, each NWSL team’s rating is reverted toward the league average between seasons to account for factors such as changes in personnel and retirements. For the NWSL, two-thirds of a team’s rating from the previous season carries over into the new season; that amount is based on the first three seasons and is in line with other soccer leagues around the world (both men’s and women’s). This year’s results, however, may indicate that NWSL teams should be reverted further toward the league average each season. Or maybe this is just a crazy season. Only time (and more data) will tell. If at the start of the National Women’s Soccer League season you thought two-time defending champions FC Kansas City would be in third-to-last place just over halfway through the season or that two-time regular-season champions Seattle Reign FC would have almost as many losses as they did in their previous two seasons combined, you’re either psychic or your predictive abilities are far greater than ours. Before this year’s matches got underway, we built a model to forecast the league using the best information we had available: data from the three previous NWSL seasons. But because two of those years were dominated by Seattle and Kansas City, correctly predicting this year’s chaos in the league would have been very difficult. So with the table in tumult and the end of the regular season not far off, we thought this would be good time to update our initial predictions, see what’s changed and look ahead to which four teams are most likely to reach the playoffs this fall. Below is a table showing each team’s overall rating — made up of offensive and defensive components (higher is better for both) — as well as its projected win-loss-tie record and its chances of making the playoffs. first_imgSri Lanka church explosiontwitterIndian intelligence agencies had reportedly warned Sri Lanka about suicide bombings at least 10 days before the eight bombings that rocked the island nation on Easter Sunday. It is being reported that the intelligence input had highlighted possibilities of attacks at the Indian High Commission in Colombo and churches in the country.Based on India’s inputs, Sri Lankan police had sent out an alert saying that based on a foreign intelligence input, a radical Islamist group National Thowheeth Jama’ath (NTJ) may carry out various attacks in the country, Indian Express reported. The alert by Sri Lankan police was issued on April 11 by Deputy Inspector General of Police Priyalal Dissanayake. It was addressed to several security divisions, asking for heightened security of VIPs and senior government officials, Economy Next reported. However, since Sri Lanka had a peaceful history for a decade now after the crushing of Tamil militant group LTTE, there was no follow up on the alert especially when the country was celebrating the onset of Tamilian New Year since April 12. Sri Lanka’s celebrations came to a shocking halt when eight bombings rocked some churches and hotels in the country killing 290 people and wounding 450 more. The Sri Lankan police have arrested 13 people said to be involved in the serial blasts. One of the accused, who had gone missing from his house six months ago, was arrested from Cinnamon Grand Hotel – one the targetted hotels. Why didn’t Sri Lanka act on the intelligence input?Seemingly, the single largest terror threat for Sri Lanka in the form of LTTE seemed to be fast disappearing after their crushing military defeat in 2009. Sri Lanka had, therefore, softened its anti-terror laws and there was no major terror incident reported in the country for over a decade. The Easter Sunday bombings not only shook Sri Lanka but the entire world. The bombings on churches where Christians had gathered to celebrate Easter and five-star hotels bear a striking resemblance to ISIS-style bombings across the world. The LTTE, on the other hand, had mostly refrained from attacking the Christian community which constitutes nearly seven per cent of the Sri Lankan population. In fact, in LTTE dominated places, the Christians and Tamils have lived together for years with no possible danger. Explosion at St. Anthony’s Church at Kochchikadetwitterlast_img read more

Why The Threshold Of A Heat Advisory Depends On Where You Live

first_img Share Gabriel C. Pérez/KUT NewsYou may have heard that term ‘heat advisory’ quite a bit during this latest heat wave. It’s a notice the National Weather Service sends out to tell people that they need to take precautions to stay safe in the heat – especially people who work outside. In the Houston area, a heat index of 102 degrees triggers a heat advisory. More heat today with a few showers or storms possible mainly southwest of the Houston metro this afternoon. pic.twitter.com/4QrQZYlVk5— NWS Houston (@NWSHouston) July 24, 2018Alex Lyster is a senior forecaster with the National Weather Service in Midland.“Some places, you know, get hotter. So people are probably a little bit more acclimated to 105 degrees than other locations in the state, and that’s why their threshold is 110,” Lyster said. When it comes to declaring a heat advisory, there’s a sliding scale in Texas – not a finish line. In Midland, Lyster and his team have issued heat advisories each of the past four days, since either the temperature or the heat index hit 105 degrees. But there are other parts of the state where that probably would not merit a heat advisory.“And actually up toward the Red River near Wichita Falls and the eastern Texas Panhandle, that is also 110 degrees for the threshold for a heat advisory,” Lyster says. This isn’t just guesswork, either. Craig Crandall is a professor of internal medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and the director of the thermal and vascular laboratory at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital.“The body has a very important capability of adapting to the heat,” Crandall says. “That’s very clear, lots of data. Even the high school football coaches know that. You never work the kids hard on the first day.”Generally speaking, the more often and more intense our exposure to heat, the better we can acclimate to it. So since it tends to be more hot and humid in Houston than, say, the Davis Mountains, you’d expect Houstonians to handle the heat better than those west Texans. It makes sense then that the heat advisory threshold in the mountains is a heat index of 100 degrees, versus 108 in Houston. There is a condition for this to be true though: You actually have to go outside.“But if the person in Houston spends all their time in the air conditioning, and the person in the Davis Mountains spends all their time out hiking, the person in the Davis Mountains is going to be more acclimated than the person in Houston,” Crandall says. “And the person in Houston is going to be at greater risk than the person in the Davis Mountains.”In other words – although there may be theoretical differences in how Texans handle heat – air conditioning is the great equalizer.last_img read more

first_img Free Webinar | Sept 5: Tips and Tools for Making Progress Toward Important Goals August 5, 2016 Attend this free webinar and learn how you can maximize efficiency while getting the most critical things done right. No matter how fast technology advances, the core strategy to successful sales never changes. Know your customers and their pain points. Be able to coherently explain your value proposition. Nurture strong relationships. These are the moves that will allow you to build a robust sales culture in your organization.Related: 5 Million-Dollar Strategies Companies Use to Manage Their Sales ForceStill, technology is making a difference — a big difference: The recent proliferation of mobile broadband technology, combined with increasingly sophisticated software, is allowing salespeople to take their productivity and service skills to new heights.Cloud adoption, for one thing, is accelerating among businesses of all sizes, as more and more CEOs recognize the potential conveniences and cost savings that come with hosting data on the cloud. And advanced technology is making it possible to track and evaluate more sophisticated sales data in real time, giving salespeople new tools to complete tasks more efficiently. It is now clear that although good salespeople cannot rely solely on technological solutions to do their jobs, innovative tech products are changing B2B sales processes in profound ways. Here are four.1. The cloud is turning road warriors into mobile information hubs. The average B2B customer expects more from his or her sales representatives than ever before. Those expectations include more information, detailed answers and quicker responses. Thanks to mobile-friendly cloud platforms, any salesperson can more easily and less expensively give prospects what they want. Many cloud solutions, in fact, combine inventory management, accounting, customer service and ecommerce in a single platform, so sales reps can quickly provide accurate and up-to-date information no matter how far away from the office they are.In short, there is no longer any need to send to accounts receivable a customer who has a question about his bill, or forward him to the help desk to check on the status of a ticket that’s been opened. Traveling sales reps now have instant access to current information as it changes, allowing them to further cultivate their relationships with clients and provide a streamlined, cohesive customer experience. And, with properly implemented CRM tools, sales organizations are seeing as much as $8.71 in ROI for every dollar spent, according to data from Nucleus Research.2. Real-time metrics is allowing managers to make adjustments instantaneously. To make your sales operation as lean as possible, you must measure a wide range of performance metrics for you team members. For most of history, this was a tedious affair, and so time-consuming that results could generally be evaluated only weekly or monthly. Just imagine how much you lost in productivity back then by not correcting a glaring issue for an entire month!Today, things are different: New software programs that read data from phone and email databases let sales managers look at performance numbers as they are updated in real time. As a manager, if you see that one of your sales reps does something which negatively impacts her effectiveness and efficiency, you can address it immediately to avoid future mistakes and limit wasted effort and resources.Additionally, these programs can track more advanced sales metrics, such as qualified lead velocity rate, that previously were tough to compute and analyze.Related: 5 Reasons Not to Replace Your Sales Reps With Robots3. Training programs are more creative and engaging.A solid sales training program is the backbone of any company with a proven track record of sales success; and technology has opened up exciting new possibilities here.Where many SMBs once hired expensive consultants or sent teams to out-of-office workshops, to build a foundational training plan, sales reps now have access to presentations from the world’s leading training experts using just an Internet connection. You can also find professional development software programs, allowing sales reps to complete online courses at their own pace so their coursework does not interfere with their other duties. You can tie these advanced training efforts into an existing incentive program, and encourage salespeople to adopt new technology to better serve their clients and improve their performance. At SAP, for example, employees and trainees are offered in-classroom support as well as online learning modules to sharpen their skills wherever they are, from their local office or while they’re on the road.Sales acceleration technology opens up new avenues for productivity.Sales acceleration technology is software specifically designed to help salespeople work smarter and faster, and it is poised to grow exponentially in the coming years. It allows sales reps to track their own performance, better integrates their marketing and sales efforts and incorporates sophisticated tools to monitor market trends and let sales rep make informed decisions about future opportunities. In an article on Bain Insights, Bain & Company partners Dianne Ledingham, Mark Kovac, and Laura Beaudin, along with director Sarah Dey Burton, wrote that, “Investments in technology can automate or eliminate low-value activities from sales reps so they can spend more time with customers. Coca-Cola Enterprises, for example, has equipped its field sales reps with a mobile application that gives them detailed information about each store they serve, including the store’s assessment of Coca-Cola’s performance.”The company,” the Bain article continued, “also released a mobile app that enables store owners to reorder and log service requests. As a result, both the sales team’s productivity and customer satisfaction have risen.”Yet another benefit of sales acceleration technology is that it aligns the customer’s purchasing journey with the company’s sales effort. As customers gain access to increasing amounts of product information via online resources, sales professionals can use detailed and segmented data collected via the software to better understand the needs and wants of their clients.Related: The Future of Retail: 6 Ways the Cloud Will Reinvent the Sales FloorHowever, as useful as it may be, sales acceleration technology is no substitute for the human connection between salesperson and client. Instead, it gives your sales reps better tools they can use to enrich these relationships. Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. 6 min read Register Now »last_img read more
