PARIS – The state of Minnesota lost its bid to host what would have been the first world’s fair on U.S. soil in almost 40 years when the organization that oversees the events voted Wednesday to make Argentina’s capital the site of one planned for 2022-2023.The Trump administration has sought to boost American interest in world’s fairs, international displays of ingenuity that in the past brought the world the Eiffel Tower, the Ferris Wheel and Seattle’s Space Needle. But in its latest vote, members of the Bureau of International Expositions, based in Paris, picked Buenos Aires over rivals Bloomington, Minnesota and Poland’s third-largest city, Lodz, to host a specialized World Expo.Argentinians at the vote literally jumped for joy as the result was announced — and then started handing out white-and-blue soccer t-shirts with star Argentinian player Lionel Messi’s name on them.Delegates donned the t-shirts on top of their suits as members of the Argentinian bid team hugged and kissed each other in excitement and relief. It will be the first expo in Latin America under the auspices of the BIE, which began operations in 1931.Full-scale World Expos that last six months are now held every five years, while three-month expos devoted to specific themes take place in intervening years. The U.S. delegation was clearly disappointed, but the government was undeterred. The State Department said it “looks forward to working with other U.S. cities and states interested in bidding to host a future World’s Fair.”The Minnesota bid committee and the U.S. State Department congratulated Argentina on its selection.“I’m confident we’ve done nothing but good for our region, and for the advancement of the theme Healthy People, Healthy Planet,” board member Marilyn Carlson Nelson said in a statement.Gov. Mark Dayton said the committee “put our state’s many accolades on the world stage, and demonstrated again why Minnesota is such a world-class place to live, work, and innovate.”Minnesota had proposed a health-focused expo to capitalize on the state’s world-class medical institutions and medical device makers. The Polish delegation looked especially grim after the defeat of its bid, on the theme of how post-industrial cities can reinvent themselves.Argentine Foreign Minister Jorge Faurie said Buenos Aires’ bid is aimed at showing creative ways that smartphones and other increasingly accessible technology can “give people around the world an opportunity to have better lives.”“We are very happy not only for my country but for South America,” Faurie told reporters in Paris as he invited countries around the world to mount exhibits at the expo.Argentina’s organizers hope the event will attract at least 6 million visitors.Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, is set to host the next full World Expo in 2020. A specialized expo focused on energy was held this year in Kazakhstan’s capital, Astana.___Karnowski reported from Minneapolis.
CALGARY – Alberta’s Crown-owned bank is forecasting moderate economic growth this year, but no big drop in the province’s jobless rate.ATB Financial is projecting GDP will increase by 2.8 per cent.Chief Economist Todd Hirsch says that is better than the recession years of 2015 and 2016, but not as strong as 2013 and 2014 before the economic downturn.Hirsch says the unemployment rate is expected to come down gradually from 7.9 per cent to about 6.8 per cent.He says U.S. oil prices have strengthened, but Alberta isn’t benefiting because there isn’t enough pipeline capacity to get the province’s heavier crude to markets.ATB says non-energy industries such as agriculture, tourism and technology are expected to perform well this year.Housing prices are projected to improve, but housing starts will remain the same or decrease slightly.“We’re expecting 2018 to be okay for the housing market, probably some modest price increases as some optimism comes back,” he said Thursday.“However, pulling against that is changes in the mortgage lending. That is going to restrict some buyers from getting into the market or it’s going to force them to look at lower priced properties.” (CTV Calgary)
SINGAPORE – The annual gathering of Southeast Asian leaders began Tuesday with a warning from the host, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, about threats against international rules that underpin world stability and economic growth.“The international order is at a turning point,” Lee said at the opening ceremony of the summit of the 10-nation Association of Southeast Asian Nations.“The existing free, open and rules-based multilateral system, which has underpinned ASEAN’s growth and stability, has come under stress,” Lee said.U.S. President Donald Trump’s “America First” foreign policy and his resistance to multilateral agreements and institutions are viewed as an affront and a challenge in a region whose modern economies are largely driven by global trade.Among issues on the agenda for ASEAN and other leaders attending meetings in Singapore this week, including U.S. Vice-President Mike Pence, are talks on a new regional trade pact that would commit member countries and others in the Asian-Pacific region to opening markets further.Lee said ASEAN and other participating countries including India and China, but not the United States, have made “substantive progress” on the market-opening initiative, called the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership. However, it’s unclear if a deal will be reached in Singapore. Participants say India, for one, is balking at opening its markets wider to imports from China under the accord.Trump is staying away from the Singapore summit, and also from the annual meetings of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum that will begin later this week in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.Chinese leaders are busy burnishing their own free trade credentials as they speak out against Trump’s efforts to get Beijing to change policies aimed at making Chinese industries leaders in advanced technologies.Three days after taking office, Trump pulled out of a Pacific Rim trade initiative, the Trans-Pacific Partnership. He has ordered punitive tariffs on billions of dollars of Chinese products, among other measures, to address complaints over the U.S. trade deficit, China’s technology policies and other market access issues.“All countries are linked in the same industrial chain in the world today and China and the U.S. are an important part of it. No one wants or expects to see an interruption of it,” Chinese Premier Li Keqiang said Tuesday in a lecture on the sidelines of the summit.ASEAN groups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. The globalization of manufacturing has been a key factor driving dynamic growth in the regional economy, which has more than doubled in size since 2007 to $2.8 trillion in 2017.The momentum must be in the direction of more, not less, open trade, said Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad.Otherwise, he warned, there could be a “domino effect” in which countries engage in increasingly protective measures against their rivals.Inward-looking, protectionist policies have gained ground in ASEAN as elsewhere, he said.“This is not the time to close our doors by invoking trade protectionism measures but instead we should be actively engaged in finding amicable solutions,” Mahathir said. “It is now that we must continue to expand our intraregional trade and deepen the economic integration within ASEAN.”While talks on the ASEAN-centred trade accord stumble along, the 11 countries that have remained in the Trans-Pacific Partnership are preparing to inaugurate their revised trade deal.Renamed the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership, it is due to take effect on Dec. 30.Several other economies are hoping to join the pan-Pacific accord, including the Philippines and South Korea.Japanese media reported that Taiwan’s representative in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, former chairman of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Morris Chang, plans to ask Japan to back the island’s request to also become a member.___Associated Press video journalist Jerry Harmer contributed to this report.

“The science is clear. We need to drastically lower greenhouse gas emissions in order to protect the planet and avoid dangerous temperature rises globally,” stressed Rob Vos, a Director of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA). “If we do not significantly reduce emissions the damage to poor countries as a percentage of GDP [gross domestic product] will be up to more than 10 times greater than in the United States and most other developed countries,” Mr. Vos told reporters in New York at the launch of the 2009 World Economic and Social Survey: Promoting Development, Saving the Planet.Mr. Vos noted that for every rise of one degree in global temperature, the annual average growth in developing countries drops betweens two and three percentage points with little impact on advanced countries. However, to satisfy development needs, energy demands will have to rise in developing countries, posing a challenge in how to combine the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions with economic objectives.“To do this we will need huge adjustments in developed, but in particular developing countries,” said Mr. Vos. “The transformation of energy services will be key… This will have to go hand-in-hand with large-scale interrelated investments in order to address simultaneously the climate change and development goals.” The World Economic and Social Survey suggests that market solutions, including the development of a carbon market, through “cap and trade” mechanisms or taxation schemes in developed countries, are not the solution for developing countries. Rather, it recommends a combination of large-scale investments and active government policy interventions for developing countries.Among the possible multilateral measures in support of a global investment programme set out in the report is the creation of a global clean energy fund, a global feed-in tariff regime in support of renewable energy sources, a climate technology programme and a more balanced intellectual property regime for aiding the transfer of clean energy technology.“We are suggesting that we need a globally funded public investment programme to allow developing countries to engage both in cleaner generation of energy and still meet their development objectives,” said Mr. Vos.“The ballpark figure that we think is needed would be one per cent of global output, [or] around $500 to $600 billion per year starting well within the coming decade, and not – as many other studies suggest – that those levels should be reached by 2030 or beyond.” 1 September 2009A United Nations report launched today recommends a new Marshall Plan of more than $500 billion per year, or one per cent of global output, to help developing countries ease the impact of global warming and adjust to its effects while continuing on a path of economic growth.
US Assistant Secretary of State Robert Blake says Sri Lanka’s Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission had laid the groundwork for continued reconciliation following Sri Lanka’s 26-year-long conflict with the LTTE.“The LLRC offers a very promising way forward to help Sri Lanka become again the Island of peace and prosperity,” Blake said. “The U.S. will support reaching those goals.” Meanwhile Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to the US Jaliya Wickramasuriya recognized the strong relations between the U.S. and Sri Lanka, as well as the positive results of the re-development policies of His Excellency President Mahinda Rajapaksa for Sri Lanka. He said this at Sri Lanka’s Independence Day celebrations held in the US on Saturday, the Sri Lankan Embassy in the US said in a statement today. The ambassador called upon Sri Lankan-Americans to “tell the correct story of Sri Lanka’s progress,” and on Sri Lankan youth to “remember your roots.” “Sri Lankans know that the best solutions will be home-grown,” the ambassador said at the event. “We know our country, we know our people and we know the expectations of our people. We know what works, and, because we are a democracy, we know that the solutions we seek will be adopted by a representative government.“That is, after all, how the great democracies of the world have settled their internal issues, including the United States. As we look to the United States as an example of self-determination, I am happy to report that our relationship with the U.S. remains strong and is growing stronger.”

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Two years after guiding the company through an unprecedented email hack, Sony Entertainment CEO Michael Lynton is leaving the company to become the chairman of the board for Snap Inc., the company behind Snapchat.Sony said Friday that Lynton, a 13-year Sony veteran who led both the music and entertainment group, will stay on for six months to ensure a smooth transition as Sony Corp. President and CEO Kazuo Hirai looks for a replacement. In a statement, Lynton said he had been involved with Snapchat since its early days and is choosing to focus on that company given its recent growth.Lynton started with Sony in 2004 as chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment and in 2012 was named CEO of Sony Entertainment.Sony Pictures Entertainment and its various film divisions have been struggling of late at the box office with underwhelming performances from higher budget fare such as “Ghostbusters,” ”Inferno” and “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk.”Lynton’s highest-profile moments during his tenure came in the aftermath of the devastating November 2014 hack involving the leak of proprietary information, employee Social Security numbers and embarrassing emails from top executives such as Sony Pictures Entertainment co-chair Amy Pascal.Five Sony-produced movies, including the unreleased “Annie,” appeared on file-sharing websites. The hack hindered Sony’s business operations, including the release of the James Franco and Seth Rogen film “The Interview,” and led to the departure of Pascal only three months later.“The whole series of events, not just for myself, but for everybody in the company, had so many twists and turns to it that every time you thought you were going down a path, every time people thought we got this in hand, the next thing you knew we’d have another threatening email come through two days later or another series of events,” Lynton told The Associated Press at the time.

Stay on target T-Shirt Tuesday: The Best Hulk ShirtsT-Shirt Tuesday: The Best Fortnite Shirts Back in the days of geek prehistory, a T-shirt was a signal to the world around you that you cared about your nerdy pursuits enough to fly them like a flag. Companies like Graphitti Designs contracted with movie studios and comics publishers to create shirts with our favorite characters and sold them up on the walls of comic book stores and through mail order. The computer revolution has enabled the T-shirt world to become something totally new – affordable production and distribution means that shirts can be printed in small quantities and sold anywhere in the world. Starting with Threadless, dozens of companies popped up letting artists and designers show their stuff. It’s a better time than ever to be a geek fashionista, and if you’re looking to expand your wardrobe we’re going to help you out every week… on T-Shirt Tuesday. This week: a set of shirts inspired by Nintendo’s Pokemon franchise so cool that you’ll have to catch ’em all.Kawaii PikachuMight as well lead off with the de facto mascot of the Pokemon series, that little electric mouse we’ve all come to know and love as Pikachu. Designer kudasai takes inspiration from classic Japanese advertising art to reinterpret modern pop culture characters in retro ways, and their take on Pikachu is one of the best we’ve seen. It’s a little weeby but not overwhelmingly so.$20, buy it here.Pokeball AnatomyOf all the mysteries in the Pokemon universe, how Pokeballs work is an enduring one. You just throw them at any size of beast and they somehow transform into energy and are sucked inside – but what’s it like in there? Are the Pokemon conscious? Do they have cable? This schematic diagram from artist SoleVision doesn’t answer any of these questions, but it’s a cool shirt anyway.$20, buy it here.EevolutionMost Pokemon have a pretty standard evolutionary path, maybe with one or two branches here or there. And then there’s Eevee. Originally this baby could only transform into a trio of forms – Flareon, Jolteon, and Vaporeon – but as the franchise has expanded more and more evolutions have been added until Eevee basically became the Swiss army knife of the Pokemon world. This charming design by Nados illustrates them all in a slick and approachable vector style.$20, buy it here.Dragonball PokemonKudos to VintageTeeShirt for fusing two legendary Japanese anime together into a single sweet T. Taking titular hero Goku from Dragonball Z and tricking him out with Ash’s trainer hat and a handy Pokeball is one thing, but then having him ride through the clouds on a Gyarados puts this into legendary status. The exceptional line work worthy of Akira Toriyama makes this something more than a novelty knock-off.$20, buy it here.Wood Owl WoodsLove that cute little Rowlet, the bow tie wearing vegetable owl that you could start with in Pokemon Sun & Moon. Artist Versiris seems to be as fond of the little guy as we are, creating this image of a strong and gnarled tree on a misty forest morning that attracts a number of Rowlets as well as some other creatures.$20, buy it here.Blood Sugar Sex MagikarpWe love all Pokemon, even the ridiculous ones. So the idea of paying tribute to the flip-flopping fish Magikarp, the least threatening pocket monster of the original 151 appeals to us greatly. Designer Byway had the brilliantly bizarre idea of parodying the cover of the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ 1991 major label breakthrough Blood Sugar Sex Magik by revising the tribal cover artwork to feature Magikarp instead of the four band members. It’s so ludicrous it’s amazing.$20, buy it here.MimikyuOne of the most meme-worthy Pokemon in the latest batch is Mimikyu, a Ghost-type who masquerades under an old rag as a Pikachu to lure the unwary. This clean, expressive illustration by Laflleche is a great way to tell onlookers that you’re not what you seem to be. Mimikyu’s not a bad guy, though – it only wears the disguise because it thinks looking like a Pikachu will make it easier to make friends.$20, buy it here.Missing MomOne of my personal favorite Pokemon is Cubone, the “lonely type” that walks around in a skull feeling sorry for itself because it lost its mother. Obviously designer wetbrained has a similar soft spot for the little guy, as they created this charming tribute to the mournful little guy’s lost parent.$20, buy it here.FirestarterThe original three starter Pokemon – Bulbasaur, Squirtle, and Charmander – have a place in any gamer’s heart and were a big part of the franchise’s success. All three of them were deftly designed monsters with winning personalities and fun abilities. This cute shirt from BlancaVidal pairs a chubby-cheeked Charmander with a subtly creepy caption to make a hot pick for any Pokemon fan.$20, buy it here.Kanto GamesThe thing that makes Pokemon so addictive is that you never know what you’re going to get. That random encounter could be a rare shiny that you’ve been hunting for months, or it could be just another damn Pidgey. It’s a lot like the classic claw games you see at arcades and pizza parlors, and artist Donnie captures that hilariously with his shirt that pictures a dejected trainer struggling to pick out a Pokeball.$20, buy it here.Bad GirlTeam Rocket might not be the most effective antagonists around, but they certainly have earned a place in pop culture. This richly detailed illustration by ProfessorBees casts Jessie as the prototypical “bad girl” with tattoos and an attitude, striking a pose atop the back of her loyal Arbok. It’s a clever modernization of the character that stays true to her personality.$20, buy it here.Let us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey.
Stay on target Microsoft held one of its strongest Xbox briefings at this year’s E3. The company did a great job of proving it isn’t a one-trick pony by showcasing a variety of different titles. It’s clear the Redmond-based group wants to distance itself from the “shooter box” stigma. It is also evident the company is looking ahead. As I said before, the Xbox One is effectively a dead system. Hope lies in the future, and that’s exactly what Microsoft is preparing the Xbox brand for.One of the biggest problems plaguing the Xbox One is a lack of exclusives. Sony and Nintendo seem to drop a major exclusive title every month. Conversely, the Xbox One is lucky to get even three big exclusives out of the door. To make matters worse, the exclusives Xbox does get are either divisive or suffer from low sales. Games like Sea of Thieves and State of Decay 2 brought in a lot of players, but they aren’t exactly universally praised. Then you have excellent exclusives like Sunset Overdrive which failed to make a dent sales-wise. The Xbox has an “exclusives” problem.Microsoft understands the current state of Xbox exclusives, hence why it has purchased a number of notable developers to bolster its exclusive lineup. These devs include Undead Studios, who is responsible for the State of Decay series. Playground Games, the studio behind Forza Horizon. Compulsion Games, who is releasing We Happy Few later this year. Finally, there’s Ninja Theory, which recently released Hellblade on Xbox One. Microsoft even created a new studio called The Initiative.Playground Games and Undead Studios being under the Microsoft umbrella makes sense given how they already produce exclusives for Xbox. Compulsion Games is an interesting acquisition since it has yet to fully prove itself. The biggest gain is Ninja Theory. One can argue the developer has never released a bad title during its existence. I’d even go so far as to say that, given enough time and resources, Ninja Theory can grow to rival Sony’s Naughty Dog studio. These studios have the potential to produce quality titles, but there’s one last thing needed to take things to the next level: a new console.Like I said in my last editorial about the current state of Xbox, the only way for the brand to truly move forward is to start over with a new system. The reveal of the Xbox One still haunts the console. Despite all of the strides made to course-correct, gamers still remember the $500 price tag, the DRM, “TV TV TV Sports sports sports,” and any ridiculous thing said by Don Mattrick. There doesn’t seem to be anything Microsoft can do to fix the Xbox’s image. The best thing to do is a hard reset in the form of a shiny new system.Sony recently stated it wouldn’t release a new console (the PlayStation 5) for another three years. The next Xbox could potentially release within the next two to three years. Xbox head Phil Spencer said the new console is currently in development during yesterday’s briefing. The next generation will be here sooner rather than later. It typically takes anywhere between two to five years to produce a solid video game. If Microsoft’s newest studios are already working on titles, it is safe to say they’ll be on the next Xbox. I’m not saying these devs will produce games for launch, but they’re no doubt all working on something for the upcoming Xbox system. A new system with new games is something few hardcore gamers will pass up, especially if both the hardware and software are legit. With talented studios producing quality titles and a new system to play them on, Microsoft is setting the stage for its grand comeback. Anything can happen in the next couple of years. Success is not guaranteed. Still, this is the best position Xbox has found itself in since the golden age of the Xbox 360. I think we’re about to witness a newly revitalized Xbox brand put Sony and Nintendo on notice. Even if you aren’t a fan of Xbox, you have to feel excited overseeing what these new studios will make for Microsoft’s upcoming console.Let us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey. When Shana Newton injured her hand and was benched for months, she still scheduled and managed the Portland Avalanche goalball team. That’s what team captains do, she said.Newton also pulled up goalball videos to watch on Youtube. At night, Newton said, she even dreamed goalball dreams.“It’s really become a lifestyle for me,” Newton, 21, said on Saturday afternoon while her Portland Avalanche teammates were working with out-of-town visitors, the Tacoma Typhoon, to build skills and scrimmage. Everybody was wearing masks across their eyes, she pointed out, because not all goalball players are completely blind — but you want everybody on the court to be playing at an equal level of sightlessness.Newton herself is a good example. She’s legally but not totally blind, she said. She’s extremely athletic and loves to compete. But when she used to try playing basketball or other sports with sighted friends, “it didn’t work out for me,” she said. Then she discovered goalball while a student at the Washington State School for the Blind in Vancouver. Goalball is a three-on-three court sport that was developed in the aftermath of World War II as a way to help rehabilitate blinded war veterans; it became a regular part of the summer International Paralympic Games in 1980 and is now considered the premier team game for blind athletes worldwide. The Vancouver-Portland area is a hotbed of goalball activity — and other recreations and outings for seeing-impaired people, whether they consider themselves athletes or just plain folks — largely thanks to the Northwest Association for Blind Athletes, a homegrown Vancouver nonprofit agency. The Association works with grants and donations to provide blind people with all sorts of physical fun — from guided hiking to tandem biking and swimming to sailing to judo — that they might not be able to access otherwise.

Some patients also have respiratory distress, doctors said.According to the doctors, treatment options are limited in this regard. The focus of NiV management should be on prevention. Strategies include intervention to prevent farm animals from acquiring NiV.Exerts said the healthcare workers should follow standard precautions, including washing hands and wearing gowns, caps, masks and gloves. If anybody complains of headache, fever or similar symptoms, he or she must be taken to a hospital immediately.
Advertisement To be fair to the players, they just arrived back on American soil last night, and have been caught in the middle of an international media firestorm. Maybe they just haven’t had the chance to pick up the phone.Secondly, it’s not like calling the President of the United States is like giving your friend a quick buzz for watching your house while you’re on vacation. If the President keeps this up, he might get a ring from LaVar Ball. Nobody wants that. LiAngelo Ball, Jalen Hill, and Cody Riley have arrived back on American soil, after being freed by Chinese authorities for allegedly shoplifting during their overseas team trip.According to reports, President Trump stepped in to secure the players’ release by personally requesting Chinese President Xi resolve the situation, and this morning he tweeted that he would like to be personally thanked by the players for springing them from Chinese custody. The sooner the better.Do you think the three UCLA Basketball Players will say thank you President Trump? They were headed for 10 years in jail!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 15, 2017

One genius Bruce Lee fan took a nunchuck fight scene from Fist of Fury, and recreated it as a lightsaber fight. This may vault immediately into the “greatest fight scene ever” category. Lee makes Luke Skywalker look like a washed up has been, and the nunchuck lightsabers are possibly the coolest movie fight weapon ever.Even though Colin always bags on “Star Wars nerds,” even he can appreciate this.
Free Webinar | Sept 5: Tips and Tools for Making Progress Toward Important Goals August 5, 2016 Attend this free webinar and learn how you can maximize efficiency while getting the most critical things done right. No matter how fast technology advances, the core strategy to successful sales never changes. Know your customers and their pain points. Be able to coherently explain your value proposition. Nurture strong relationships. These are the moves that will allow you to build a robust sales culture in your organization.Related: 5 Million-Dollar Strategies Companies Use to Manage Their Sales ForceStill, technology is making a difference — a big difference: The recent proliferation of mobile broadband technology, combined with increasingly sophisticated software, is allowing salespeople to take their productivity and service skills to new heights.Cloud adoption, for one thing, is accelerating among businesses of all sizes, as more and more CEOs recognize the potential conveniences and cost savings that come with hosting data on the cloud. And advanced technology is making it possible to track and evaluate more sophisticated sales data in real time, giving salespeople new tools to complete tasks more efficiently. It is now clear that although good salespeople cannot rely solely on technological solutions to do their jobs, innovative tech products are changing B2B sales processes in profound ways. Here are four.1. The cloud is turning road warriors into mobile information hubs. The average B2B customer expects more from his or her sales representatives than ever before. Those expectations include more information, detailed answers and quicker responses. Thanks to mobile-friendly cloud platforms, any salesperson can more easily and less expensively give prospects what they want. Many cloud solutions, in fact, combine inventory management, accounting, customer service and ecommerce in a single platform, so sales reps can quickly provide accurate and up-to-date information no matter how far away from the office they are.In short, there is no longer any need to send to accounts receivable a customer who has a question about his bill, or forward him to the help desk to check on the status of a ticket that’s been opened. Traveling sales reps now have instant access to current information as it changes, allowing them to further cultivate their relationships with clients and provide a streamlined, cohesive customer experience. And, with properly implemented CRM tools, sales organizations are seeing as much as $8.71 in ROI for every dollar spent, according to data from Nucleus Research.2. Real-time metrics is allowing managers to make adjustments instantaneously. To make your sales operation as lean as possible, you must measure a wide range of performance metrics for you team members. For most of history, this was a tedious affair, and so time-consuming that results could generally be evaluated only weekly or monthly. Just imagine how much you lost in productivity back then by not correcting a glaring issue for an entire month!Today, things are different: New software programs that read data from phone and email databases let sales managers look at performance numbers as they are updated in real time. As a manager, if you see that one of your sales reps does something which negatively impacts her effectiveness and efficiency, you can address it immediately to avoid future mistakes and limit wasted effort and resources.Additionally, these programs can track more advanced sales metrics, such as qualified lead velocity rate, that previously were tough to compute and analyze.Related: 5 Reasons Not to Replace Your Sales Reps With Robots3. Training programs are more creative and engaging.A solid sales training program is the backbone of any company with a proven track record of sales success; and technology has opened up exciting new possibilities here.Where many SMBs once hired expensive consultants or sent teams to out-of-office workshops, to build a foundational training plan, sales reps now have access to presentations from the world’s leading training experts using just an Internet connection. You can also find professional development software programs, allowing sales reps to complete online courses at their own pace so their coursework does not interfere with their other duties. You can tie these advanced training efforts into an existing incentive program, and encourage salespeople to adopt new technology to better serve their clients and improve their performance. At SAP, for example, employees and trainees are offered in-classroom support as well as online learning modules to sharpen their skills wherever they are, from their local office or while they’re on the road.Sales acceleration technology opens up new avenues for productivity.Sales acceleration technology is software specifically designed to help salespeople work smarter and faster, and it is poised to grow exponentially in the coming years. It allows sales reps to track their own performance, better integrates their marketing and sales efforts and incorporates sophisticated tools to monitor market trends and let sales rep make informed decisions about future opportunities. In an article on Bain Insights, Bain & Company partners Dianne Ledingham, Mark Kovac, and Laura Beaudin, along with director Sarah Dey Burton, wrote that, “Investments in technology can automate or eliminate low-value activities from sales reps so they can spend more time with customers. Coca-Cola Enterprises, for example, has equipped its field sales reps with a mobile application that gives them detailed information about each store they serve, including the store’s assessment of Coca-Cola’s performance.”The company,” the Bain article continued, “also released a mobile app that enables store owners to reorder and log service requests. As a result, both the sales team’s productivity and customer satisfaction have risen.”Yet another benefit of sales acceleration technology is that it aligns the customer’s purchasing journey with the company’s sales effort. As customers gain access to increasing amounts of product information via online resources, sales professionals can use detailed and segmented data collected via the software to better understand the needs and wants of their clients.Related: The Future of Retail: 6 Ways the Cloud Will Reinvent the Sales FloorHowever, as useful as it may be, sales acceleration technology is no substitute for the human connection between salesperson and client. Instead, it gives your sales reps better tools they can use to enrich these relationships. Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. 6 min read Register Now »
On 11th December, at the KubeCon+CloudNativeCon conference held at Seattle, Graffana labs announced the release of ‘Loki’, which is a horizontally-scalable, highly-available, multi-tenant log aggregation system for cloud natives that was inspired by Prometheus. As compared to other log aggregation systems, Loki does not index the contents of the logs but rather a set of labels for each log stream. Storing compressed, unstructured logs and only indexing metadata, makes it cost effective as well as easy to operate. Users can seamlessly switch between metrics and logs using the same labels that they are already using with Prometheus. Loki can store Kubernetes Pod logs; metadata such as Pod labels is automatically scraped and indexed. Features of Loki Loki is optimized to search, visualize and explore a user’s logs natively in Grafana. It is optimized for Grafana, Prometheus and Kubernetes. Grafana 6.0 provides a native Loki data source and a new Explore feature that makes logging a first-class citizen in Grafana. Users can streamline instant response, switch between metrics and logs using the same Kubernetes labels that they are already using with Prometheus. Loki is an open source alpha software with a static binary and no dependencies Loke can be used outside of Kubernetes. But the team says that their r initial use case is “very much optimized for Kubernetes”. With promtail, all Kubernetes labels for a user’s logs are automatically set up the same way as in Prometheus. It is possible to manually label log streams, and the team will be exploring integrations to make Loki “play well with the wider ecosystem”. Twitter is buzzing with positive comments for Grafana. Users are pretty excited for this release, complimenting Loki’s cost-effectiveness and ease of use. Head over to Grafana lab’s official blog to know more about this release. Alternatively, you can check out GitHub for a demo on three ways to try out Loki: using Grafana free hosted demo, running it locally with Docker or building from source. Former Arizona Rep. Don Shooter shows health improvement “Some of you might be wondering why a Secretary of State is keynoting an event about wildlife trafficking and conservation,” Clinton said on Thursday, before answering her own question: “Over the past few years wildlife trafficking has become more organized, more lucrative, more widespread and more dangerous than ever before.”Elephants across Africa are being slaughtered by the thousands for their ivory tusks, which are shipped to Asia, particularly China, and made into ivory trinkets. In Tanzania alone, 10,000 elephants a year are said to be killed by poachers.Rhino horns are in great demand globally, particularly in Southeast Asia, ground up for use as alleged aphrodisiacs and in traditional medicines or turned into decorative dagger handles.Iain Douglas-Hamilton, the founder of Save the Elephants, said Clinton’s speech “signifies the will of the United States to tackle the scourge of wildlife poaching and elevates the issue internationally. Now it remains to share awareness with the Chinese and for the U.S. and China to exert joint leadership to lower the demand for ivory before it is too late.”Yao Ming, the oversized basketball star from China, visited Kenya in August to raise awareness in China about the animal deaths required to supply ivory to China’s middle class. He is taking part in a film called “The End of the Wild.” Clinton said the U.S. will reach out to leaders around the world to forge a consensus on wildlife protection. The U.S. also plans to launch initiatives and expand and strengthen enforcement of wildlife laws. She noted with regret that the U.S. is the second-largest destination market for illegally trafficked wildlife.Elsewhere on Friday, a South African court sentenced a Thai national to 40 years for selling rhino horns. Chumlong Lemtongthai pleaded guilty to paying prostitutes who posed as hunters to harvest rhino horns, which were then sold on Asia’s traditional medicine market, according to the South African Press Association. At least 458 of South Africa’s endangered rhinos have been illegally killed this year _ a record number.___Associated Press reporter Carley Petesch in Johannesburg contributed to this report.(Copyright 2012 The Associated Press. in Government, Origination, Secondary Market, Servicing New Bill May Extend Conforming Loan Limits On Monday lawmakers introduced a bill in Congress that would extend the current conforming loan limits for another two years ├â┬ó├óÔÇÜ┬¼├óÔé¼┼ô a deal that could potentially continue federal insurance for homeowners with high conforming jumbo loans.[IMAGE]Rep. John Campbell (R-California) and Rep. The bill has been sent to the “”House Committee on Financial Services””:http://financialservices.house.gov/, which anticipates holding a hearing before October, when the limits will expire.””Housing makes up one sixth of the American economy and is a key component to our economic recovery,”” Campbell said in a statement. “”H.R. 2508… will ensure that qualified homebuyers in this country continue to have access to the financing they need at a time when there are few alternatives. This will not only help to stabilize home prices, but would also provide for continued recovery in the broader economy.””Concerned that lower loan limits would dampen mortgage loan availability across the country and force consumers to shoulder the costs, numerous trade and industry associations continue to petition Congress over the issue, according to “”_Reverse Mortgage Daily_””:http://reversemortgagedaily.com/2011/05/31/future-of-hecm-loan-limits-under-review-says-hud/. There is no lender that would hold a loan that amount without having someone to sell a jumbo loan to. No one will want these.””Others, such as Scott Sheldon, a loan officer with California-based “”Sonoma County Mortgages””:http://www.sonomacountymortgages.com/, see extensions by Congress as a done deal waiting to happen.””I think they’re going to extend the loan limits and keep them in place the way they are,”” Sheldon says. “”If there’s less mortgage volume, it won’t help the housing sector. [Officials] would shoot themselves in the foot. That’s why I think they’re”” going to extend the limits. “”The economy is too unstable to do something like that,”” he adds.
